The Old Commercial Center

Location: Center of the city.

The first commercial center, or shopping center, in Sderot was built in 1958. The corner grocery store there, Sasson Sarah's Corner, was named for its owner. He was one of the prominent and colorful personalities in the city, who died unexpectedly in 2020. For decades, this store, the first one opened in the city, was a major attraction for politicians who came to visit.

Along the avenue of stores, you will find kiosks, stores selling food, etc. On the other side of the road, a pub, a pizzeria, and a bar have been opened in recent years, all belonging to former students at Sapir who have settled in the city. In the evening hours, the place is full of life, and several times a month, there are performances here. Nearby is the old municipality building which served the residents of Sderot and its elected officials for decades until 2021 when its offices were moved to a temporary site on Bar Lev St. The transition resulted from the fact that the building was old and not sufficiently protected against rocket attacks nor accessible for people with disabilities. A new, accessible, and protected municipality building will be built soon in the Neot Eshkol neighborhood.

In the old, mythological municipality building, offices are currently under construction for rent where young entrepreneurs will be able to work and pay reasonable rental fees. The building will also enable startup companies to rent space for their incubators.

The whole area has been renovated in the past few years, and 30 spaces have been prepared for stores in the commercial plaza. Moreover, in the process of the extensive renovations of the old commercial center, at a cost of ILS 30 million, the infrastructure and lighting has been replaced, benches have been affixed to the ground and trees have been planted. The old awnings have been replaced with new, upgraded ones, and the infrastructure and water systems have been replaced, and special led lighting has been installed.
