Location: Keren Hayesod St., Founders’ Neighborhood
The kibbutz is one of the prettiest streets in the city. On both sides of the street, the branches of tall, strong, Albizia Lebbeck trees almost completely cover the road extraordinarily paved with interlocking stones, creating a tranquil European look. Along Shaked St., you will find 18 small and inviting, attractive cottages exuding warmth. The dining room is on a lot at the center of the kibbutz, and that is where cultural programming is conducted too. There is another area where the offices are located, including Gvanim’s office (see more below).
This is one of the only urban kibbutzim in Israel. The first couple came to the kibbutz in March 1987. They moved to the current location in July 2000 after construction which took several years. Today, there are 50 people residing at the kibbutz.
The largest and most important facility of the kibbutz is the NGO, Gvanim, established in 1994. This organization conducts a range of community projects: an assisted living facility for people with disabilities (on the kibbutz grounds); a center for people with disabilities who participate in Sherut Leumi, national service, in Sderot; a factory for populations of individuals with disabilities; support for new communities; continuing education courses for completing bagrut, high school matriculation exams; a choir for individuals with disabilities; and a café, Coffee Gotha at the Sderot Cinematheque at 4 Hadegel St., glatt kosher, and operated by youth-at-risk.
